One cold morning on the Way we experienced a very intense but wonderful occurrence. As we were blasting through our first 10 km, as is our morning custom, we realised we were being followed by two incredibly big and imposing German Shepherds. We heard a pilgrim mentionsomething about them being the “Camino dogs”. It turned out that these two friendly lads followed the first pilgrims on the road, sticking with them for as long as they stayed ahead.
We soon got over our initial reservation at having these very big beasts twisting in and around our legs, nudging us gently on the sides of our thighs when we slowed down and patiently waiting, tongues out, when we stopped to drink some water or break. We felt protected by them, and gave them water when we stopped for a coffee. It was just one of those magical Camino moments that we won’t forget. One of surprise and then simple trust.
It got us talking as well about all the various gorgeous animals we cross each day and Mel suggested it would be nice to have a little animal special on the blog. So here is a treat for all you fur and feather lovers out there!
(Thank you Mel for your pics of my with the puppy and with the German Shepherds!)
